Le réalisateur français Gérard Pullicino réalisera l’émission développée pour PBS
L’ARTISTE ET AUTEUR COMPOSITEUR MONTRÉALAISE CHANTAL CHAMANDY
CHANTERA DEVANT LES PYRAMIDES D’ÉGYPTE LE 7 SEPTEMBRE PROCHAIN
Montréal, le 23 août 2007 - Une équipe de québécois partira pour le Caire dans les prochains
jours afin de produire un spectacle unique qui se déroulera le 7 septembre prochain devant les
pyramides du plateau de Gizeh. C’est avec la permission du gouvernement égyptien que le
spectacle Chantal Chamandy, Beladi, Une soirée sous les Pyramides, mettant en vedette
l’Orchestre symphonique du Caire, sera présenté devant un auditoire de plusieurs milliers de
spectateurs. Ainsi, Chantal Chamandy est l’une des rares artistes avec Sting, Shakira, Julio
Eglesias et les stars égyptiennes de la musique, Fairouz et Magda al-Roumy, à avoir accès à
ce site majestueux pour la présentation d’une performance live.
L’Orchestre symphonique du Caire se joindra aux musiciens de Chantal Chamandy, auteur
compositeur montréalaise d’origine égyptienne. Elle sera aussi entourée de ses danseurs
auxquels s’ajoutera une troupe de danseurs égyptiens, dont le danseur étoile du Cairo Opera
House Ballet Company, Ahmed Nabil. Le spectacle sera distribué à toutes les stations du
réseau de télévision PBS (Public Broadcast System) aux États-Unis et sera officiellement
présenté aux télédiffuseurs du monde entier lors du MIPCOM (Marché international du film et
de la Télévision de Cannes), en octobre prochain. Des discussions sont actuellement en cours
avec des télédiffuseurs du Québec et du Canada.
Retour dans son pays d’origine
Née à Alexandrie en Égypte, Chantal Chamandy, qui a grandi à Montréal, a vu la possibilité de
réaliser un rêve, celui de chanter dans son pays d’origine devant l’une des merveilles du
monde. « C’est une chance unique qui se présente à moi, et c’est pourquoi il était primordial
pour moi de m’entourer des meilleurs au monde dans le domaine de la production de ce type de
performance. Je suis surtout fière de démontrer tout le talent et le savoir faire des artistes et
artisans québécois qui ont collaboré à des productions de classe mondiale. Ce spectacle sera
un moment magique dans ma vie », a souligné Chantal Chamandy.
Le projet a débuté il y a plus d’un an alors que des démarches ont été entreprises afin d’obtenir
l’autorisation du gouvernement égyptien d’accéder à ce site exceptionnel.
Une équipe de classe mondiale
C’est le réalisateur français Gérard Pullicino, récipiendaire de nombreux prix, qui a notamment produit et dirigé des performances de Céline Dion, Madonna, Johnny Hallyday et Joe Cocker qui réalisera l’émission. « Il s’agit pour moi d’un projet excitant alors que ce site archéologique remarquable, qui est la dernière merveille du monde antique, devient mon terrain de jeu. Je suis tout aussi heureux de découvrir une nouvelle artiste. Chantal est très humaine, et le concept du spectacle qu’elle a imaginé constitue une extraordinaire occasion pour le téléspectateur de voir l’Égypte et ses merveilles à travers son regard dans une mise en scène moderne. Il s’agit pour elle d’un retour à sa terre natale et c’est cette magie et cette émotion que je tenterai de capter pendant le spectacle », a déclaré le réalisateur.
Toute une équipe d’artisans québécois participe à l’aventure, dont Guy St-Amour, scénographe, qui a notamment été associé au spectacle LOVE du Cirque du Soleil et à la réalisation de la Tohu. La chorégraphe Geneviève Dorion-Coupal agira aussi comme codirectrice artistique du spectacle avec Chantal Chamandy, elle qui a collaboré aux spectacles LOVE du Cirque du Soleil, Génération Motown, ainsi que Unison de Céline Dion. Le travail de l’éclairagiste Matthieu Larrivée (Simple Plan, Diana Krall, Alanis Morissette) permettra de mettre en valeur toute la beauté naturelle des pyramides et du Sphinx.
Le concert sera distribué au réseau PBS
Le spectacle que donnera Chantal Chamandy sera distribué aux stations du réseau PBS aux États-Unis. L’émission sera disponible pour diffusion en mars 2008. Des éléments culturels, historiques et touristiques commentés par l’artiste et auteur compositeur seront également présentés dans l’émission. «C’est fantastique que cette production soit diffusée et vue par des milliers, voire même des centaines de milliers de gens en Amérique du Nord. Je suis heureuse que cet événement me permette de présenter ma musique à la communauté égyptienne, mais je veux aussi qu’il serve de vitrine historique à la richesse culturelle pour mon pays. D’un point de vue artistique, c’est extraordinaire de produire un spectacle qui sera diffusé à si grande échelle », a ajouté Mme Chamandy.
Une mise en scène unique pour un lieu unique
Sise devant la Grande Pyramide de Gizeh et du Sphinx, la scène, dont les dimensions seront à la mesure du lieu, a été dessinée par Guy St-Amour, designer montréalais récipiendaire de plusieurs prix pour ses mises en scène. Cet aménagement unique, à plusieurs paliers, comprend une scène qui logera une quarantaine de musiciens de l’Orchestre symphonique du Caire. Une deuxième scène est prévue pour l’orchestre de Chantal et un immense plateau central permettra d’accueillir des dizaines de danseurs du Québec et du Caire qui l’accompagneront dans des chorégraphies développées spécialement pour ses chansons. De nombreuses caméras permettront de capter le spectacle live de Chantal sous plusieurs angles, mettant ainsi en valeur sa performance et le site archéologique unique où elle se déroulera. Le spectacle sera enregistré en cinq langues : français, anglais, arabe, espagnol et italien.
À propos de Chantal Chamandy
Avec son album Love Needs You lancé au printemps 2007, Chantal Chamandy a été propulsée dans le top 100 selon Soundscan pour les ventes de disques au Canada. Déjà, en février dernier, son single Feels Like Love a atteint des sommets après seulement trois semaines sur le marché atteignant la 25e position dans le classement BDS top 50 et la 10e position au top 25 dans la catégorie adulte contemporain. En mars 2007, la chanson a d’ailleurs été consacrée Platine par la CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association).

French director Gérard Pullicino to direct show developed for PBS
MONTREAL SINGER-SONGWRITER CHANTAL CHAMANDY TO PERFORM BEFORE
THE PYRAMIDS IN EGYPT ON SEPTEMBER 7
Montreal, August 22, 2007- A team from Quebec will be leaving for Cairo in the next few days to produce a unique show on September 7th in front of the pyramids on the Giza plateau. The Egyptian government has granted permission for Chantal Chamandy, Beladi, A Night at the Pyramids, featuring the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, to be presented before an audience of several thousand people. Chantal Chamandy one of only a handful of artists, which includes Sting, Shakira, Julio Eglesias and Egyptian stars Fairouz and Magda al- Roumy, to have access to this majestic site for a live performance.
Montreal singer-songwriter Chantal Chamandy, who is of Egyptian origin, will be performing at this site, accompanied by the Cairo Symphony and her own musicians. She will also be joined by her dancers, along with an Egyptian dance troupe including Ahmed Nabil, principal dancer with the Cairo Opera House Ballet Company. The show will be distributed to all the stations of the PBS (Public Broadcast System) network in the United States. It will be officially presented to international broadcasters at the MIPCOM (Marché international du film et de la Télévision in Cannes) in October. Discussions with broadcasters in Canada and Quebec are currently underway as well.
Returning to her roots
Chantal Chamandy, who was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and raised in Montreal, saw the
possibility of realizing her dream of singing in her homeland before one of the great wonders of the world. “It’s a unique opportunity for me: that’s why I had to work with the world’s top producers of this type of performance. I’m very proud to showcase the talents and skills of Quebec performers and artistic and technical experts who have worked on world-class productions. This show will be a magical moment in my life,” said Ms. Chamandy.
The project’s origins date back more than a year when Ninemuse Entertainment’s production team sought authorization from the Egyptian government to use this exceptional site.
A world-class team
Award-winning French director Gérard Pullicino, who has produced and directed shows by such megastars as Celine Dion, Madonna, Johnny Hallyday and Joe Cocker, will direct the concert. “This is an exciting project for me since it turns this remarkable archeological site, the last wonder of the ancient world, into my playground. I’m also delighted to discover a new artist. Chantal is very human, and the concept she has come up with for the show is an outstanding opportunity for viewers to see Egypt and its wonders through her eyes, in a modern staging. She is returning to the country of her birth, and it is this magic and emotion I will attempt to capture in the show,“ said Mr. Pullicino. The crowd witnessed a high intensity moment provided by Chantal and her ensemble of top dancers.
A large team of Quebec artistic and technical experts will be taking part in this production,
including set designer Guy St-Amour, who worked on Cirque du Soleil’s LOVE and on the
production of Tohu. Choreographer Geneviève Dorion-Coupal will serve as the show’s coartistic
director, along with Chantal Chamandy. Her previous projects include Cirque du Soleil’s
LOVE, Génération Motown and Celine Dion’s show Unison. Lighting designer Matthieu Larrivée
(Simple Plan, Diana Krall, Alanis Morissette) will bring out all the natural beauty of the pyramids
and the Sphinx.
The concert to be distributed to the PBS network
Chantal Chamandy’s concert will be distributed to all of the stations of the PBS network. The
show will be available to begin airing in March 2008. Television viewers will be able to enjoy the
performance, which will also include cultural, historical and tourist elements, with commentary
by the singer-songwriter. "It is fantastic that this production can be captured and eventually seen
by hundreds of thousands of people in North America. I am happy that this event and tv show
will enable me to perform before the Egyptian audience, but I also want it to serve as a window
into the cultural richness of my ancestral country. From an artistic point of view, it is
extraordinary to produce a concert that will be distributed on such a large scale,” added Mrs.
Chamandy.
A unique stage design for a unique location
The stage will be set up in front of The Great Pyramid of Giza and the Sphinx, and its
dimensions will measure up to grandeur of the site. It was created by Guy St-Amour, who has
won a number of awards for his stage designs. His unique multi-level design includes a stage
for some forty musicians from the Cairo Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Chamandy’s band will be on
a second stage, and a huge central stage will accommodate dozens of dancers from Quebec
and Cairo, who will perform numbers especially choreographed for her songs. Multi angle
cameras will tape the live show from many angles, to highlight the performances and the unique
archeological setting in which the show is being presented. The concert will be taped in five
languages: English, French, Arabic, Spanish and Italian.
About Chantal Chamandy
With the release of her album Love Needs You in spring 2007, Chantal Chamandy shot into the
top 100, based on Soundscan’s figures for album sales in Canada. This past February, her
single Feels Like Love climbed the charts only three weeks after its release, reaching 25th spot
in the BDS top 50 and 10th spot in the top 25 for the adult contemporary category. The single
was certified platinum by the CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association) in 2007.
